Populating 3 dropdown boxes using PHP/MySQL/Ajax

I have three dropdown boxes that all fetch data from my MySQL database. What is supposed to happen is that once you choose an option in the first dropdown box, the second dropdown box will be activated and populated with data specific to the result in the first dropdown box (for example, the name that I will choose in the first dropdown box will be used for the WHERE statement that the 2nd dropdown box will use). The same thing goes for the 3rd dropdown box.

Can anyone help? I'm sure my problem isn't new but I'm having trouble thinking about how to approach this problem.
