css “holes” on timeline made of <1px elements

Timeline with holes

In this example, I have a timeline with a fixed ~120px width made out of 200 side-by-side divs. If I drag my handle to the right the glitchy lines disappear. I'm curious exactly what causes them, other than browser math is bad -- and how to prevent them.
