Pulling large MYSQL database into R causes my computer to freeze [on hold]

I have a MYSQL database that is ~12 million rows, and 160 columns.

If I try to import the entire database into R my whole computer ends up freezing and eventually I have to restart. Even if I try to import only a quarter of the database it still freezes.

My computer has 8gb of RAM, and I'm not running other programs.

Is it likely a hardware issue and I just need more RAM? Are there more efficient ways for R to handle large data without having to sample?
