Image Asset requirements

I am trying to create Adaptive Launcher Icons in Android Studio. The result is a my image rendered as a small icon with lots of padding within a circular Launch Icon.

I have scaled the image so it consumes the entire grid, but I still get lots of padding in the icon. I have tried toggling Trim option with the same results. What's more, the padding is NOT the background color I chose.

I don't know if the problem is with my Image Asset file, or the way the OS (API 28) renders the icon.

I think the problem could be with the Image Asset I am using. What are the requirements for this type of asset:

  1. Alpha channel?
  2. Transparency?
  3. Recommended size?

thanks in advance.
