How do I add a drawable-xhdpi asset to an android project build from Unity?

I inherited a project from another developer. It is a Google cardboard/daydream project using GoogleVR. The workflow is to build the project in Unity, then open that project in Android Studio to generate an APK.

When I build the project as is, it builds fine in Unity, but the apk build fails in Android studio complaining that a drawable, defined in the manifest as the android:banner

Android resource linking failed

error: resource drawable/app_banner (aka drawable/app_banner) not found. error: failed processing manifest.

I have found this resource from an older, previously building version of the Android project, and if I copy it directly into the Android Studio project (built by Unity), the apk will proceed to build fine.

How can I include this resource in the Unity project so that when it builds the Android project, I don't have to copy this asset in every time? I want to commit it into the repository as well.
