Android Modular App - Dependencies Missing at Runtime

I'm trying to modularize a legacy android app. I have managed to extract the existing code into a feature module and I've only left the launcher intent activity and an activity class in the app module.

I've cleaned up the build.gradle file of the app module to only contain the libraries that I'm using. All other dependencies are moved to the feature module build.gradle.

The project builds and launches, but then I start getting runtime exceptions for missing classes and methods that are part of the feature module dependencies. When I add those as a dependency in the app module build.gradle file, the exceptions fo away.

Is it required that the app module depends on all feature module dependencies or am I missing something?
